Cates came out to the 2024 Kohl's Fall Ranking Event in Texas. He competed well and graded out as a 4-star kicker and punter. Cates scored 6 points on field goal charting, 90.80 points on kickoffs, and 91.27 points on punt charting. His best kickoff was a 58-yard ball with 3.46 seconds of hang time. Cates connected on a 49-yard punt with 3.88 seconds of hang time. Cates has a well-rounded skill level and has the potential to succeed at a high level in all three disciplines.
